These publishers are ready to spend any sum of money on these CMSes to keep their business running. Content management systems undoubtedly provide you with the most advanced functionalities and features which are not otherwise possible without the use of these CMS.

The Enterprise CMSes though are made to look as the only option by vendors due to their high commissions, but today there are open source solutions available where you don’t need to burn a hole in your budget and can still get the features which “Enterprise Grade CMS” vendors provide. Today the most affordable one stop solution for your expenses is WordPress.

WordPress has thousands of plugins nestled inside it which can be easily customized as per the user requirement. There are plugins which are specifically designed to manage your editorial workflows, team management and other software integration used by the publishers. Having the knowledge to use these plugins according to ones needs can work wonders for your WordPress sites as well as help you upgrade your WordPress as a powerful and efficient CMS. Of all these WordPress plugins, the ones which are great in managing the editorial workflow are listed below.

1. ContentCloud

The ContentCloud WordPress plugin developed by Betaout has redefined how multiple-user websites and news editorial websites are perceived and administered. The multiple utility plugin developed as a SaaS (Software as a Service) has a user friendly interface that allows successful management of all editorial requirements of various authors and editors from its single interface. This plugin gives an all around control on various editorial and writer workflows, thus making the task of managing multiple-author websites work easy. The plugin integrates with the WordPress site quite easily enabling resource sharing between authors, editors and publishers and at the same time offering customized workflow solutions for the entire editorial team. The plugin offers different apps for managing editorial teams and other staff members including writers and guests from its Newsroom App and Workbench App, respectively. The content cloud plugin has developed an HTML5 application which makes it functional on devices such as tablets, iPad and android powered devices.

2. User Role Editor

User Role Editor is a WordPress plugin that enables users to change the role capabilities. This plugin provides you with check boxes of capabilities and by activating them, a user can choose their role and then by clicking ‘revised’ option, can save their desired changes. You can very easily add new responsibilities and customize them with qualifications according to your needs. Frivolous self appointed roles can be removed if there is any lack of qualified users who have been assigned such roles. You can also alter the responsibilities assigned to new users by default. Based on specific user capabilities individual roles could be assigned. Users are even empowered to insert new qualifications and remove the ones which are not required anymore.

3. Document Repository

Document Repository is content publishing add-on plugin. Sometime when a single blog has multiple editor or content writers and admin or publisher wants to review all the articles before they go live, Document Repository is definitely a must have plugin for any Word Press blog. This plugin allows the user to maintain a central repository for document that may reside in different domains or websites. Although this plugin is made for single domain actions. With the help of JSON technology this plug is capable of maintain cross domain repository. Document Repository plugin simply holds any newly submitted document on hold mode so that it can be made visible to the editor or someone with publishing rights, such that they can review the article and then approve it to go live on the blog. It also informs the writer about approval of the document content submitted to the document repository. It also allows document downloading over permalink URL.

4. Role Scoper

Role Scoper plugin is basically suitable for blogs with a large number of editors and moderators. But of course we do not want to give everyone complete control over our blogs. This plugin allows the super moderator to define the role of every member of the blog with content specific permissions. It allows bloggers to assign each of the moderators some particular task or content so that they can do their job without hampering the overall blog publishing. This plugin does not actually change the core permission or role assignment of the WordPress but adds some extra role assignment to each and every post and sections of the blog. It also allows systematic promotion and demotion strategies to control other moderators along with additional role assignment. It can also allow the subscriber to edit some of the content if they feel something wrong about the post. Also this plugin protects the actual blog publish so that subscribers who made edits to a post cannot go live without the moderator’s approval. It also offers a complete detailed reporting system that shows the current role play of the moderators and users, thereby allowing better administration.

5. Simple History

Simple History is a basic administration history management plugin that allows the web admin to view or undo his/her previously made changes. It also adds a completely different page on the WordPress admin dashboard that shows all the previous edits and changes. Not only limited to changes or edits, this plugin also shows all kinds of WordPress website activities like posts, comments and publishes etc. in the history section. The main features that I personally love about this plugin is History RSS feed. This is an accustomed RSS feed generated by this plugin, which allows me to view all history elements directly from my favorite RSS reader. The plugin provides an RSS feed URL during Plugin Configuration and I can simply add the resource link to my RSS reader and it keeps notifying about various changes happening over my website and blogs. This plugin also allows the developer to create a custom history section by re-modifying some of the scripts. There are the translation features that are built-in with the plugin offering a wide range of language convenience for its users.
